James Frey wakes up on a plane, with no memory of the preceding two weeks. His face is cut and his body is covered with bruises. He has no wallet and no idea of his destination. He has abused alcohol and every drug he can lay his hands on for a decade – and he is aged only twenty-three.

What happens next is one of the most powerful and extreme stories ever told. His family takes him to a rehabilitation centre. And James Frey starts his perilous journey back to the world of the drug and alcohol-free living. His lack of self-pity is unflinching and searing.

A Million Little Pieces is a dazzling account of a life destroyed and a life reconstructed. It is also the introduction of a bold and talented literary voice.

Compulsive, if emotionally bruising.

 on 6 February 2016

Shocking, well written (I normally don’t like American writing) and excoriating account of an ascent from the hell of drug and alcohol dependency of a young man. It wasn’t easy or comfortable to read, but it was compulsive and wholly believable. It was also pretty much life-changing in that it has moderated my rather set and self-satisfied views about addiction of any kind. James Frey spares no detail, and I was surprised to discover his almost total lack of self-pity. I have no idea where he finds his strength, and I cannot express how much I admire his stance of accountability: no-one but he is to blame for his situation. I’m not sure why I bought this book in the first place – it is so far removed from my normal choice of reading matter, but I’m so glad I did. I think that if people were compelled to read this at a very young age, it might prevent more than a few falling into a similar destructive cycle. The ending, to my astonishment, had me crying, and I still feel (some months later) physically and emotionally bruised by this book.

A Million Reasons To Read This Book!

This is an exploration of addiction, or what can influence or impact upon degrees of addiction, threads of which surely exist in us all but can be devastatingly and darkly compelling for some.

One Of The Best Books Ever Written

A Million Little Pieces is the best of James Frey. If you’ve heard about it and thinking about getting it just get it. The way he writes is completely unique and like no other. There aren’t words to describe how amazing A Million Little Pieces is. Follow it with My Friend Leonard. These books have a very special place in my heart and no doubt a lot of other peoples hearts as well.

Foreword by the author explains his part in embellishing parts of his story, so read with caution. I still found this an amazing description of life as a drug/alcohol addict and how he turned things round in rehab, in his own way! If you’re looking for something heartwarmingly positive to read, this is not it.

Very honest book.

This book gives a real insight into the lives of people struggling with addiction and the challenges it brings, it is a very honest book about the stages of recovering from addictions and alcoholism. Frey talks about his own recovery and the people he met on that journey. It is a great book for those who have a loved one or friend struggling with an addiction, or professionals who work with people struggling. I learnt a great deal about the struggles people with addictions face and it helped me grow in my compassion towards them.

A perfect example of what lengths people will go to when caught in the clutches of addiction, and what a hard path sobriety can be to follow… this is a very raw account of one person history with addiction, and how it has affected other’s around him… this is the second time i’ve ordered this book as i lost my first copy, i would rate this as one of the best books i have ever read! I would recommend readers purchasing his follow up book ‘My friend Leonard’ if they enjoy this story.

I enjoyed this book. I read it as a novel m ore than an account of facts and it me kept me guessing until the end. Very moving and sad but the honesty regarding the mind of the addicted was very accurate

What a roller coaster!

I loved this book, I hated, despised, yet ultimately admired James! It gave me a look behind the lives of these lost addicts and it both repulsed and terrified me. It is a very honest book, enjoy!

Unique and beautifully written

This is probably one of the most unique books I’ve ever read. James Frey writes in such a different way compared to most authors. This book really enticed me and quite honestly I couldn’t put it down which resulted in a few sleepless nights and groggy mornings! The way James Frey really gets into your head and makes you feel as if you are there in that moment is incredible. I cannot wait to read more of his work!
