"A wonderful idea, gloriously put into practice. Greg Jenner as is witty as he is knowledgeable" (Tom Holland)

Who invented beds? When did we start cleaning our teeth? How old are wine and beer? Which came first: the toilet seat or toilet paper? What was the first clock?

Every day, from the moment our alarm clocks wake us in the morning until our heads hit our pillows at night, we all take part in rituals that are millennia old.

Structured around one ordinary day, A Million Years in a Day reveals the astonishing origins and development of the daily practices we take for granted. In this gloriously entertaining romp through human history, Greg Jenner explores the gradual and often unexpected evolution of our daily routines.

This is not a story of politics, wars, or great events; instead Greg Jenner has scoured Roman rubbish bins, Egyptian tombs and Victorian sewers to bring us the most intriguing, surprising and sometimes downright silly nuggets from our past.

Drawn from across the world, spanning a million years of humanity, this book is a smorgasbord of historical delights. It is a history of all those things you always wondered – and many you have never considered. It is the story of your life, one million years in the making.

This book has been very well researched and goes through the history of many of our daily habits or the objects we use and take for granted. Loads of interesting tit bits to take away and discuss with friends and family! I enjoyed it so much I got a copy for my Step Dad.

This is so much fun, and so illuminating – no surprise really from someone who was involved in the amazing Horrible Histories. I have been eagerly anticipating the release of this book, and have not been disappointed. My husband and small daughter love hearing bits and pieces, and as well as being a sheer joy to read, I can also see it becoming a fantastic reference book for lots of school projects.

Quite a good premise, but seems to have been written for children. Full of “witty” asides and cultural references that are just distracting.

A really simple idea for a story through time but very well done. Funny, engaging, interesting and surprising – I really enjoyed this book.

As I’m a big kid, I love Horrible Histories. This is HH for grown-ups and smart adolescent grown-ups. Some really interesting historical gems generously given with wit and humour. Can’t wait for the book on Versailles.

Great read, history from a new perspective

Only half way through but finding this really good read, very funny and interesting. History but not as we know it, from a different slant. And about different things that I hadn’t thought about before. Loving it so far.
