"A wonderful idea, gloriously put into practice. Greg Jenner as is witty as he is knowledgeable" (Tom Holland)

Who invented beds? When did we start cleaning our teeth? How old are wine and beer? Which came first: the toilet seat or toilet paper? What was the first clock?

Every day, from the moment our alarm clocks wake us in the morning until our heads hit our pillows at night, we all take part in rituals that are millennia old.

Structured around one ordinary day, A Million Years in a Day reveals the astonishing origins and development of the daily practices we take for granted. In this gloriously entertaining romp through human history, Greg Jenner explores the gradual and often unexpected evolution of our daily routines.

This is not a story of politics, wars, or great events; instead Greg Jenner has scoured Roman rubbish bins, Egyptian tombs and Victorian sewers to bring us the most intriguing, surprising and sometimes downright silly nuggets from our past.

Drawn from across the world, spanning a million years of humanity, this book is a smorgasbord of historical delights. It is a history of all those things you always wondered – and many you have never considered. It is the story of your life, one million years in the making.

Horrible Histories for grown ups

 on 10 May 2017
By Amazon Customer
Endlessly interesting, this is a potted history of many of the everyday things we take for granted. Greg Jenner leads us through an average modern Saturday explaining the origins of many things including time, pets, alcohol, teeth-cleaning, table manners and (as you would expect from a co-writer of Horrible Histories) toilets (among many many more). Written in a light entertaining style he shows us that most things we consider modern and sophisticated have their genesis in the stone age. We aren’t so removed from our ancestors after all.

This is an excellent book that combines humour with actual History. As a history teacher I am required to read books about certain periods, but I bought this for fun and have found it to be one of the best books I have ever bought and have since bought it for friends. Its easily accessible and brings life to the little things you don’t realise have such a deep history – like why we sleep on pillows!

This book has been very well researched and goes through the history of many of our daily habits or the objects we use and take for granted. Loads of interesting tit bits to take away and discuss with friends and family! I enjoyed it so much I got a copy for my Step Dad.

This is so much fun, and so illuminating – no surprise really from someone who was involved in the amazing Horrible Histories. I have been eagerly anticipating the release of this book, and have not been disappointed. My husband and small daughter love hearing bits and pieces, and as well as being a sheer joy to read, I can also see it becoming a fantastic reference book for lots of school projects.

Quite a good premise, but seems to have been written for children. Full of “witty” asides and cultural references that are just distracting.
