Which battle was fought 'For England, Harry and St George'? Who demanded to be painted 'warts and all'? What – and when – was the Battle of the Bulge? In A Short History of England, bestselling author Simon Jenkins answers all these questions – and many more – as he tells the tumultuous story of a fascinating nation. From the invaders of the dark ages to today's coalition, via the Tudors, the Stuarts and two world wars, Jenkins weaves together a gripping narrative with all the most important and interesting dates in his own inimitable style. Until now there has been no short history of England covering all significant events, themes and individuals: this bestselling book, published in association with the National Trust, will be the standard work for years to come.

Perhaps a better title for this elegantly written brief story of this exasperating country of ours might have been A Concise History. . . since it is just that, a concise survey of a vast subject spanning seventeen centuries from 410 to, so to speak, the day before yesterday.

For anyone trying to obtain a framework in time of the history of England this book is the answer.. It is written clearly, intelligently with excellent pictures of events and people. It does not linger too long on one section of our history but each section is allocated sufficient space to provide a good understanding. It is also written interestingly and the author offers his viewpoint on certain events and the players in our history. Reads like a good novel.

Very readable; hardback version recommended; thankfully not related to Jenkins’ online column

This is a very readable summary of English history. Each chapter is short and to the point, and very illuminating for me as someone with only a weak grasp of our history. I would like to recommend the hardback illustrated version of this book rather than the paperback version. The hardback version has very nice illustrations in the text, whereas the paperback version has less attractive illustrations gathered together in the centre of the book.
