'There's no ceremony for friendship, is there? If you go ahead with this wedding then you realise that what you're actually saying is that your friendship with me is not meaningful and durable. That,' she sipped her wine victoriously, 'is the logical conclusion.'

'Believe me, if I could marry you too, Tyler, I would.'

Laura and Tyler are best friends and drinking buddies. But things are set to change. Can their friendship survive? Or will growing up mean growing apart?

Imagine what it would be like to have to constantly choose between your fiancé and your soul mate. This is the ever present predicament for Laura Joyce. She is engaged to Jim, dependable, clever and creative yet her best friend (and resident wild child) Tyler keeps pulling her to the dark (and arguably more fun) side.

I’m certainly familiar with the experience of waking up with The Fear after a heavy night on the rip. Who am I, where am I and what have I done are three of the many questions asked of oneself on the morning after the night before. Laura certainly experiences this a fair bit in Animals, relishing victories in life like actually managing to make it home and seeking refuge in the comfort and safety of the bathroom.

Great, Unique Writing-Style…OK Story

I loved this book. It’s incredible. I’ve been following Unsworth’s writing for a while and with Animals it feels like she has really hit her stride. It’s bold, confident and the writing is wholly unique. In parts, it’s even musical. Unsworth is the mistress of spinning out words that can hit you hard in the gut, tap you lightly on the shoulder, pinch your arse, or throw you a cheeky wink – within just one line. Her deftness is impressive.

Addictive…which is very apt!

I read Animals over two days, hardly able to put it down. I was gripped, excited, moved and ultimately blown away by this novel. It’s such a unique, brilliant book on so many levels. The subject matter draws the reader in – main character Laura and best friend Tyler are hedonistic literary party girls who are still choosing drink and drugs over settling and suburbia. Reading about their escapades will make anyone who had their own heydays crave a cigarette and a cold glass of white wine in a bar in a city, a night where anything might happen. That’s what the writer does so well, sums up that feeling that we’ve all had, but many have lost – the excitement, the call of “the night” as Unsworth calls it.
