Before I Let You In is a story told through three best friends Bea, Karen and Eleanor. For me the start of this book seemed a little chick-lit until things started to get a bit wierd… The story is split into three parts, is written well and contains short chapters. Towards the end of part one had my draw dropping, every mothers worst nightmare.

When this book appeared on my recommended reading list I took a change on an author I had not previously heard of – and I definitely don’t regret it at all. Whilst the ending is not a surprise (and could be guessed from midway through the plot), Jenny Blackhurst shows a real talent for portraying the psyche of both the sane and insane as she develops the motivation that leads the characters decision making process. Instead of trying to figure out what the storyline has to offer I found this book to be a page turner for a very different reason – a desire to see deeper into the brain of the main characters

As someone who only tends to read psychological thrillers, they can end up becoming a bit predictable and bland. However this book is probably one of the best I’ve read in a long time. The way it flips from one person/ time to another with each chapter is written perfectly and makes your heart race a bit quicker and makes you read even faster wanting to know more and how this is all linking together!.. A lot of books I have read that do that can make it hard to follow and just annoying but this author just reels you in. I read “how I lost you” and although I really did enjoy that book, this is on another level. Don’t buy this book if you have things to do, trust me you won’t get anything done til you’ve finished it!

I want to re-read this book! Knowing what I know now! 5*

I’ve had this on my TBR shelf a while and after reading some amazing thrillers (then an Ok one) I wanted another gripping page turner and this did not disappoint.

Pacey and well imagined

I agree with one of the male characters in this novel who finds the closeness of the friendship between the three central women a little odd at their age; however, this didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book. The story is pacey and the characters are well drawn and interesting enough to keep me intrigued by and involved in their worlds. The back-stories worked well and were useful in explaining the characters’ behaviours and decisions as adults. Will be reading more by this author.

If you like your head being messed with by a book….

….then this book is for you. I enjoyed Jenny’s first book, How I Let You Go and recommended Before I Let You In for our book club read. I absolutely loved it. I was hooked from pretty much the first page…if not a little confused. I started off thinking about one character, ‘oh yes, you are crazy’…only to then start thinking, ‘hang on, maybe you’re crazy too…’ only to then think ‘I don’t know who is crazy, who is sleeping with whom, who is telling the truth, who is lying…oh and who is narrating??’ I swung from knowing what was going on, to not knowing, thinking one thing, then another, thinking this, hoping I was wrong, then thinking something else. Sheeeesh!! I loved the fact that Jenny really messes with the reader’s head and sends you off on many tangents and then brings you back to where you started…only for you to still not know what is really going on until the very end. Loved it loved it loved it.

Written from a woman’s perspective and featuring women as the main characters, this book is more likely to appeal to the female sensitivity.

Masterful writing!

An exceptional, intriguing, enthralling read. Three women in their mid thirties, friends from childhood each with flawed personalities. A stranger enters one of their lives and chaos begins straining their friendship to breaking point. An ending with a shocking twist!
