–Mary Kubica, bestselling author of The Good Girl

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do.
You’d like to get to know Grace better.
But it’s difficult, because you realise Jack and Grace are never apart.
Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.
Sometimes, the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.

‘Behind Closed Doors gives us a glimpse into the realities of a ‘perfect marriage’, with addictive and heart pounding moments guaranteed to have you looking at your friends and neighbours differently.’
-Margaret Madden, Bleach House Library

I read a lot of psychological thrillers as well as true crime books. Nearly all of them promising to have you gripped in the latest dark and twisting story… Truthfully, I was expecting this book to be another one of those that was OK but nothing particularly memorable. I genuinely couldn’t put it down. They way it is written is so brutally honest you could be reading a diary. It flows so well, and the fact that it doesn’t try so hard to shock you with big leaps and plot twists makes it so hauntingly realistic that you start to realise that although it may not be to this extreme, that you genuinely don’t ever truly know what is going on around you hidden in plain sight. I would thoroughly recommend this book and will look out for this author in future.

Spoilers included- creepy and intense book. Enjoyed it.

This book is just creepy as hell. There are so many bad reviews, a few that makes sense, but personally I feel that readers did not truly get the true sense of fear that comes from abuse. Yes there are a few plot holes and inconsistencies but in general the idea of Jack threatening her sister with the asylum makes perfect sense. Yes an asylum no longer exists especially for a person with Down syndrome but that irrational fear makes sense of the power of fear Jack has instilled in Grace. How can a school kid get bullied in a playground full of kids and teachers?- because of the fear. Grace and Jack are no different and that’s why their weird dynamic and the extreme control he has over her works.
