Fishing all day, fishing all night, fly fishing in Scotland for two whole weeks! This is adult adventure comedy of three men’s fishing trip and the humour and entertainment they find in each other’s company. Every summer for fifteen years, Arthur, Henry, and Brian hire the same log cabin. It’s goodbye to the healthy lifestyle at home, and hello to a holiday fling in the Highlands.

But this year is different. In a log cabin just yards from their own are some unexpected neighbours. Joyce, Susan, and Jessica have come for the fly fishing too, and are looking for humour and entertainment – and maybe some adult adventure – for the two weeks they are there.

Will the men’s fishing trip result in a holiday fling to add to the big fish stories told down the pub of an evening? Will Arthur, Henry, and Brian be considered the ‘catch’ of the day? With emotions flying all over the place it doesn’t take a genius to work out that this holiday fishing in Scotland will be quite unlike any other the lads have ever been on.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.

A thoroughly enjoyable, light-hearted tale of three fishermen on their annual Scottish fishing trip. A very easy, fun read which will resonate not only with fishermen and fisherwomen but anyone who has been on a ‘mates break’ away from home, looking for relaxation and fun.

A bit technical in places

This book starts out optimistically enough, introducing the three main characters as they prepare to set out for Scotland for their yearly fishing trip. The sense of the characters are there immediately and it’s fun to follow them north and see what they get up to. The descriptions are good, even though at times the story gets a bit bogged down in technical language. It might do for someone more into fishing, but for casual readers like myself it gets a bit boring. Apart from that the story is brilliant. It grows from being a simple ‘lads holiday’ story a la ‘Three Men in a Boat’ and becomes something more the more time they spend in Scotland. I love the twist when they discover that three women are staying in a cabin not far away – also there for the fishing – and the relationships between the six of them and the relatives back home make this novel the perfect entertaining light read for a summer holiday.

Like it’s subject matter, ‘Fishing and Fancy Free’ is light, fun, and is in fact, a perfect read for anyone who wants something while they’re fishing or on a relaxing weekend break. Although there is a lot of fishing terminology which mainly goes over my head, the story is accessible enough that anyone can enjoy this book. This book does not take the explicit raunchy direction you might expect of something that starts off ‘good-looking boys meet girls while on holiday’ and this is the correct decision on the part of the author, as it means that ‘Fishing and Fancy Free’ keeps the lighthearted tone it has from the beginning. It is a bit more of a lad’s book, but there’s something in here for everyone to enjoy.
