Very impressed with my first read of the James Atkinson range of fitness books! This is a great one to start with as it focuses on the planning stage of setting a fitness regime and provides behaviour change strategies to help you achieve your aims. It covers everything from setting SMART-type goals, using visualisation & seeking out the right support. There are interesting anecdotes from the author throughout the book, about army life & his relationship with fitness at different points in his life- and there’s a sense that he has ‘been there’ whatever state of fitness you are starting from (so there’s no preaching importantly!). Overall -such a motivational book containing many strategies to get you started on the road to fitness and some which can be applied to other aspects of life too!

James Atkinson has done a brilliant job with this book. It provides very easy and simple to read content to help motivate you to build a plan for yourself to get fit. What makes it even more authentic is that James has provided real life examples from his own journey and translated his advice into simple terms whilst removing all the usual jargon that can be found in other fitness books. I would highly recommend this to anyone that would like to stay motivated to get fit and build a plan for themselves to fit their own lifestyle.

If this doesn’t get you motivated, nothing will!

“Fitness & Exercise Motivation” begins with a bang as it opens on a classic demotivating day – cold, grey and rainy. It’s the type of day that is so dreary that it can easily make you want to stay, if not in bed, at least indoors. But that isn’t where the book takes you, instead it shows you what you can and will do if you want to succeed at getting fit.

However I always wanted to look better than I do therefore looked into a few things …

James is credible, experienced and has spent the right amount of time and development to be able to put a book like this together. Speaking as a former Royal Marine I thought I had all the motivation I needed, not true, there have been so many times where I have cut corners or not really put in the effort I wanted, which in turn always left me feeling down and low for a period. After reading James book I can now see why I behaved the way I did and how easy it is to fix these mental blocks but most of all actually understand why felt the way I did sometimes. From the beginner starting out to the experienced athlete, this book has something for you.

This book is a must for anyone wanting to make a lasting change with their fitness regime. I have found that it’s easy to start a new fitness routine but can be really hard to stick with it. I lose motivation after a few weeks. Jim’s stories and advice really helped me to rethink my approach to fitness and exercise. The idea of keeping a diary/journal was new to me but it makes the difference. I can be my own personal coach in a way. That has not only helped me to stick with my workout regime but has also boosted my confidence!

A brilliant book for anyone thinking of starting their fitness journey or for anyone like myself who likes to make excuses! The book highlights what hard work and dedication achieves and it’s been written by someone who has been in exactly the same situation as everyone else giving you a more empathetic view point. I especially loved the chart, such a simple and effective idea.
