Thanks to my Kindle and to Amazon the latter of which provided hundreds of otherwise rare and expensive books free (or almost free) for use on the former, I have been able recently to read two extremely interesting books by leading participants in the American ‘Civil War’ (aka ‘The War for Southern Independence,’ ‘the War of Northern Aggression’ or, as I once heard from an elderly lady in Charleston, South Carolina, ‘The late unpleasantness’). The books, respectively, are ‘Forty-Six Years in the Army’ by General John McAllister Schofield (1831 – 1906), and ‘Reminiscences of the Civil War’ by General John Brown Gordon, C.S.A. (1832 – 1904).
