Jenny Blackhurst's debut psychological thriller and #1 Kindle bestseller HOW I LOST YOU was described by Clare Mackintosh as 'utterly gripping'. If you love Louise Jensen's THE SISTER or Tracy Buchanan's NO TURNING BACK you will love this.

My name is Emma Cartwright. Three years ago I was Susan Webster, and I murdered my twelve-week-old son Dylan.

I have no memory of what happened but you believe what your loved ones, your doctor and the police are telling you, don't you?

But if you can't remember what happened, how can you be sure that they are telling the truth?

And if there was the smallest chance your son was alive, wouldn't you do anything to get him back?
If there was the smallest chance your son was alive, what would you do to get him back?

A fantastic debut from an outstanding talent.

I loved this debut novel from Jenny Blackhurst. It’s written in the first person from the point of view from Susan who has just been released from prison.

Stunniing 5*

I decided to dive into this story after recently reading and loving The Foster Child by Jenny. I was not disappointed. What a thrilling story… A cleverly written brilliant plot. I am seriously impressed and loving this author.

Wow! Dazzling Debut Novel. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

Before I even opened this book I was hooked, of all the taglines I have seen this has got to be one of the best – “They told her she killed her baby, She served her time, What if they lied?”

Excellent Debut!

I couldn’t imagine anything like the events in How I Lost You happening to me, in real life – it is a completely terrifying roller coaster of a story, that tugs on your heartstrings from the very first page. On the surface, the plot appears to be pretty straight forward, but once you scratch the surface, a very different tale begins to emerge.

This one had me burning the midnight oil!

Really enjoyed this book; had to keep reading to find out what happened next. It’s the kind of story that you could easily see on TV; every few chapters there is one written entirely in italics, which seems to have nothing at all to do with the plot – but of course you know that at some point you’re going to see the link. I guessed what the connection was, but I wasn’t prepared for all the twists that the plot contained. Some reviewers said it was too far-fetched with too many coincidences, but that’s true of so many things that you watch on TV – but without those things you wouldn’t have a story.

I was gripped all the way through genuinely not knowing the ending until I had arrived at it.

I’ve been looking for a good thriller for a long time and at last I have found it. I was gripped all the way through, genuinely not knowing the ending until I had arrived at it. It was and easy read, with language that I can relate to. The author describes the characters, their emotions and surroundings in detail. The flashbacks seemed unrelated for a while but they are an essential part of the story. A good read and highly recommended.

Trauma and Travelodge

Ellen/Susan was convicted of murdering her child, though she has so memory of it. This is a very intriguing starting point for the unravelling of a frightening conspiracy, except that I would have expected Ellen/Susan to be a bit more deranged by her traumatic experiences. Even a little bit deranged. I was impressed with the great enthusiasm for Travelodge, and with the scenes set in Durham university, which is perfectly properly described as one of the best. The resolution involves (spoiler?) a repulsive society for over-rich, over-privileged, over-entitled yobs, which I would have thought totally unbelievable if we didn’t know that over-rich, over-entitled members of similar societies make up most of the cabinet, so I can’t really complain that any of it is too far-fetched.

Far-fetched but still very good

Started brilliantly but did stray into Hammer-House-of-Horrors territory towards the end.
