Bizarre, bonkers and utterly hilarious stories, events and characters from over a century of motor racing Includes all the big races Le Mans, Formula Three, Indie 500, Paris- dakar, Grand Prix, Daytona 500 and many more! Now published as eBook the perfect present for the petrol-head in the family! In 1894, when the motley assortment of steam and petrol-powered vehicles lined up at the start of the trial from Paris to Rouen, motor-racing's colourful history was launched. Many of the pioneering events were death-defying, trans- continental marathons, in which the competitors were obliged to negotiate basic dirt tracks, muddy bogs, fast-flowing rivers, over-zealous policemen and a seemingly endless supply of stray dogs. Barely contained in this new digital edition are 80+ bizarre, brilliant and bonkers stories from over a century of motor racing. They include the Frenchman who drove 25 miles in reverse; the Grand Prix where the leading drivers were so far ahead that they stopped for a meal in the pits; the Le Mans 24-hour race won by a car patched up with chewing gum; and the driver who drunk six bottles of champagne on the way to winning the Indianapolis 500. As other reviews said not really something to read from front to back but to dip in and out of. A good read on 7 July 2015 By Harty Very interesting and something for every motor racing fan. Written with a wry humour (yes – humour – I am not American Amazon). Some great stories. Great book on 6 January 2017 By donald wilson Great book Five Stars on 21 April 2015 By Mr. BERESFORD A BROOKE Anything to do with cars and tracing I enjoy – this ws no exception Five Stars One person found this helpful. on 28 July 2014 By Stuart NEALE GR8 A good read on 16 December 2014 By Mogodon Quick and as promised a gift on 8 January 2015 By Roger Alden It was a gift it went down well I think Amusing collection of anecdotes from the world of motorsports 4 people found this helpful. on 6 October 2010 By AK I agree with the other reviewer that this is not a book of serious scholarship on motorsports, its history or development. Yet I find his judgement of it overall unduly harsh. The book is not of the kind to be read from cover to cover and in that sense it is not a page turner. It does have plenty of amusing vignettes from the world of motorsports and I feel that it deserves 4 stars in the way it succeeds at its stated goal – to provide the interested reader with some lighthearted trivia (entertainment) on the sport.
