How does music reflect the key moments in our lives? How do we choose the works that inspire, delight, comfort or console? Fiona Maddocks selects 100 classical works from across nine centuries, arguing passionately, persuasively and at times obstinately for their inclusion, putting each work in its cultural and musical context, discussing omissions, suggesting alternatives and always putting the music first.

This is a marvellous book, suitable both for the ignorant and the knowledgeable. The distinguished music critic Fiona Maddocks has chosen 100 classical pieces of music that she loves — familiar and unfamiliar — and written informative and illuminating accounts about the circumstances under which each work was composed. This little book will itself become a classic.

Make music meaningful

A great book for people such as myself who like classical music but don’t love it and need some guidance.

Illuminates, instructs and entertains.

This is a thoroughly charming and informative personal selection of classical music from nearly 1,000 years: beautifully presented, written and illustrated it is scholarship lightly worn by a national media critic who knows her onions. Perfect Christmas – or any other occasion – present, it does what every critic is famously encouraged to do: illuminate, instruct and entertain.

I received this book as a Christmas gift. The first thing you notice is how beautifully designed and bound it is. It’s quite a covetable “object” as well as being a good read, informative even for the seasoned music lover, and in parts inspiring in discovering new works.

Wonderful!
