‘My new favourite author’ – Holly Martin, bestselling author of ‘Summer at Rose Island’

'A lovely, emotion-filled, giggle-inducing story' – Sunday Times bestselling author Milly Johnson

The brand new book from bestselling author Debbie Johnson will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you raid the pantry in the middle of the night…

The Comfort Food Cafe is perched on a windswept clifftop at what feels like the edge of the world, serving up the most delicious cream teas; beautifully baked breads, and carefully crafted cupcakes. For tourists and locals alike, the ramshackle cafe overlooking the beach is a beacon of laughter, companionship, and security – a place like no other; a place that offers friendship as a daily special, and where a hearty welcome is always on the menu.

For widowed mum-of-two Laura Walker, the decision to uproot her teenaged children and make the trek from Manchester to Dorset for the summer isn’t one she takes lightly, and it’s certainly not winning her any awards from her kids, Nate and Lizzie. Even her own parents think she’s gone mad.

Her new job at the cafe, and the hilarious people she meets there, give Laura the chance she needs to make new friends; to learn to be herself again, and – just possibly – to learn to love again as well.

For her, the Comfort Food Cafe doesn’t just serve food – it serves a second chance to live her life to the full…

I have to say that I was prepared to be disappointed by this book. I didn’t know much about the author and bought it on the strength of favourable reviews I saw from other book bloggers on Twitter and as we all know, not everyone has the same taste. Initially I intended to keep it for a holiday read but couldn’t resist in the end and began to read.

Snapped this one up when I was looking for Christmas Reads – bought the second book in the series and when I realised it was the second thought what the heck and bought this one as well. I am so glad I did! I could have happily snarfed up this book in a day but the family had Board Games in mind so had to stop at a frustrating 90% of the way through and just polished it all off this morning.

Fabulous Fabulous Fabulous…I laughed, cried and smiled my way through this book. ..Debbie’s storytelling puts you right in the moment, makes you feel that you’re there with the characters in a gorgeous part of the world, one which she clearly knows very well.

Summer at the Comfort Food Cafe begins in such a unique way with a job description and Laura’s letter in response. Not only does it give Laura’s background but her sense of loss is palpable making sure she had my emotions from the very beginning.

I’ve now read two of the Comfort Food Cafe books.. this one and Coming Home to the Comfort Food Cafe. I read them in the wrong order… but you can do that- it doesn’t matter a bit.

Unputdownable, well.written, enjoyable.

One of the best stories I’ve read in a long time. I’ve not read any of Debbie’s books before, but have bought another now.

Sometimes all you want to read is a nice feel good chick lit, that makes you feel all cosy and warm with deep thought not required. That’s what you get with Summer and the Comfort Food Cafe.

So much more than a glorious summer romance…

I totally loved this book and got completely absorbed in it. the authors’ insight into how Laura felt after losing her husband and then coping with two teenage children were so spot-on (happened to me) and made me laugh and cry at the same time. I was about to write – I would love to hear more about the Comfort Food Cafe when I noticed there was a Christmas story coming out so I have pre-ordered that and look forward to it. A lovely funny poignant read and much recommended.

This is a wonderfully written book by Debbie Johnson

This is a wonderfully written book by Debbie Johnson, I live in Devon and could relate to the peace and tranquillity we have here. But I was so taken in by this romantic novel (not my usual read) that I actually found that I picked up the road map and actually looked for this seaside retreat! Well Debbie spoke of Lyme Regis and Sidmouth which are very local for me. The poor mum’s fate was sealed when she was taken in as not only a summer worker at The Comfort Food Café but as one of the family and the wider village folks. As planned she worked the summer then set off with her two children back up the M5 to Manchester and home, school’s, family and friends. But a quick stop for a break on the motorway led to a venture that is—————Not telling you, read it you’ll love it.
