One man and his dog come face-to-face with the end of the world…

When Jon takes his dog Harry to a remote cabin for the week, he just wants to get away from the rest of the world. And then one morning, after finding that his phone is dead, Jon looks at the city in the distance and realizes that something seems very wrong.

All the power has gone out. At night, the city is completely dark. There are no planes in the sky, and when Jon drives to the nearest gas station, he finds a desolate and bloody scene. He refuses to believe that something truly awful has happened, however, until he spots a figure stumbling through the forest, heading ever closer.

A figure that smells of death.

Soon Jon is facing a desperate fight for survival. While he and his dog have been up at the cabin, the whole world has been struck by a huge, global catastrophe that has left billions dead. Many are dead, but many more have risen again. Can Jon and his dog survive, or are they doomed to suffer the same fate?

The Dog is a novel about the end of the world, told through the eyes of a dog who finds himself stuck at a remote cabin with only his owner for company.

Interesting take on the Apocalypse

This is unlike any other apocalypse tale I have ever read before, unlike most it tells the tale through the eyes of a dog.

It’s the apocalypse, Jim, but not as we know it…

I guess this is a bit of a love-it-or-hate it book, judging from some of the other reviews. Personally, I found it ticked all the boxes of a standard zombie apocalypse novel (bloody violence, breakdown of society, etc), but it was also well written and unexpectedly moving. If you can handle the central conceit of the whole story being written from the point of view of a dog, then you’ll like it – I certainly did!

The Dog; he will break your heart.

I have read and enjoyed a few Amy Cross ghost books so when I read the synopsis of The Dog, an apocalyptic story told through the eyes of a dog, I thought I would give it a try. It nearly broke my heart. The trials and tribulations of the faithful little Jack Russell Harry were almost too much to bear and showed what lengths a dog will go to for his loving master. What I didn’t expect were the graphic descriptions of zombies (I am not a great fan) but they were almost secondary to the story and I read The Dog in two days wanting a happy outcome for Harry. This book was about an epidemic wiping out 90% of the world’s population and described how those who survived rapidly became lawless and violent; how humans became inhuman. A very thought provoking book which I would thoroughly recommend.

A wonderful read – a super storyline with a terrific plot and a great central character. Written with great assurance and aplomb. Not ashamed to say I found this book emotionally challenging. Highly, highly, recommended.

Great take on a saturated apocalypse genre. All told through the eyes of an innocent dog who cannot understand why humans don’t notice how dodgy things are earlier.

Uniquely

Uniquely written from perspective of the dog. Loved this book could hardly put it down. Going to look for more by this writer.

This book is a bit of a different read than I am used to. But it put a new slant on on a story.
