“The bullets buzzed like bees, the barrage turned the sky black, with men reduced to a puff of crimson in the blink of an eye."

As the bloodiest battle of WW1 rages all around them three friends find themselves facing a phantom sniper deep in no-man's land. Set against the horror of the Somme it becomes harder for the soldiers to separate fact from fiction as their world is torn apart. One thing is certain: you never see the shots, and the marksman never misses.

Excellent read.

Read this in about 2 hours. The nightmare of the trenches is brought to life in this beautifully written short story. The vivid reality of the conditions at The Somme our young men had to endure was the real horror story and was far scarier than the actual ghost story, It was poignant and my heart went out at the naivety of the three Scots lads who signed up to fight for their country. The ending was appropriate and fitting. Nice work Mr Hart. A smashing read.

Ghost story+

Immersive from the start, feels like you are in the fog of war. Great conceit- sniper accuracy, somewhat compromised. Enjoyed the viewpoint shift amongst the three main characters. Strong ending- hard to do, final clarification of ambiguity that has gone before. Thought it might be an entertaining Xmas read, darker though, reminded me of visit to mock up trenches at Imperial War Museum. Richly rewarding read. Crump is a great word.

Haunting, harrowing and emotive. This book made me wish I had asked my father more about his experiences of war. A ghost story but so much more
