Maddy Goodchild considers herself a Bad Girl. Bad girls drink, and smoke, and swear, and have affairs with married men, don’t they? They certainly don’t spend their time keeping their bodies fit, and pure, like Maddy’s best friend Rachel. Maybe Maddy doesn’t like herself very much, but then again, she thinks maybe she doesn’t deserve to be liked. Fast approaching her forties, the only good thing she’s done in her life is bringing up her daughter Sophie – but when Sophie goes off travelling for a year, Maddy’s bereft. So there’s only one thing she and Rachel can do when they have a moderate win on the Lottery: go off on their own travels together! What adventures await the pair when they set foot together on foreign soil? Will they survive Rachel’s terrible map-reading and fear of driving ‘on the wrong side?’ The trip holds a few surprises for them both – and not all of them are pleasant.

funny and lively

I liked this book which follows the travels of two older women who decide to travel whilst their two daughters are on a gap year. They make plans do something similar but things don’t quite work out the way they have planned. There’s plenty of plot twists and turns and of course, an unforeseen ending which is satisfying and which I won’t reveal . Highly recommended!

This book was one of the funniest I have read in ages and can’t wait for Sheila’s next book. Move over Thelma and Louise! Although Maddy did have a win on the lottery, it just goes to show how your life can change if you want it to, with or without money.

Very entertaining

It took me three days to read this one instead of the usual one day stint, still enjoyed it but didn’t relate to Maddy quite as much as some of Sheila Norton’s characters in her other books. Very funny and the characters did make me laugh out. Would recommend to anyone who likes this author. Has given me even more of the travel bug!! Well written and entertaining, thanks 🙂

Careful, you might catch it!

Very enjoyable read. It won’t ever be a GCSE text but it might just inspire a few people to take the plunge, pack a case or rucksack and head off into the unknown. Maddy’s lifestyle and attitude does annoy at times – she really doesn’t grow up until the last few chapters when she ‘forgives’ herself for her past behaviour and moves forward.
