Discover the magic of camping and gain the confidence to explore the great outdoors. The go to guide for anyone that wants to get out camping, hiking and enjoying the wilds.

In this introductory book you will go for a weekend camping learning what you need to prepare and plan for before you go, and what to wear to stay comfortable.

Packed with top tips and handy hints, including the best way to pack and adjust a rucksack, what equipment you should carry, how to pitch a tent, how to get a good nights sleep, and advice on cooking on everything from a campfire to different types of modern stove. There is even a chapter on navigation so you can find the campsite and head off on adventures from there. The guide also covers basic first aid and some great activities to enjoy in the evening with children or with friends.

This book is written for those that feel the pull of nature but need a friend to tell them the basics. This guide is that friend, giving just the key information to have a great time outdoors in an easy to read and refer back to way. It would suit someone new to the outdoors or perhaps keen to get back into it, or maybe someone wanting to hone their skills before heading out on even more adventures!

The author is a professional outdoor instructor with over 18 years of field experience. A qualified Mountaineering Instructor, Winter Mountain Leader, Kayak & Canoe Coach, Wilderness Guide, Advanced Outdoor First Aider he has worked with the very finest outdoor schools and top instructors. He has led expeditions all over the World specialising in cold arctic and temperate mountainous environments but he is also at home in jungles and deserts. He has taught a wide clientele from youth offenders, school children, blue chip corporate types through to military special forces. Now it is your turn to share in the knowledge, passion and fun!

"One of the things I really love about my profession is introducing people to the skills that empower them to go off and have more adventures by themselves. This book is a product of questions friends and acquaintances have asked me when they have become interested in venturing out into the great outdoors. It struck me that there are a number of excellent specialist books on particular skills (many of them referenced at the end of this one) but not a great deal on the fundamental skills someone would need to just go camping and hiking at the weekend. " Christopher Lucas, the author from the foreword of Camping: Outdoor Skills for Your Weekend Adventure

Tea, malt loaf and boots !

Venturing into the outdoors should be a simple fun experience, however it can very quickly become an expensive and daunting experience (or as Chris would say a type 3 fun experience), technical jargon, multiple choice of products and a range of competing options vi for the attention, many an outdoors sales person has picked off the unweary (I would count myself as a easy target for outdoor shinny stuff). The market has been crying out for a grown up guide to camping, this has now been filled by Christopher’s book. Reading this book is like going on a walk with your experienced camping best friend, jargon and skills are broken down and explained in an informative non patronising way, backed up by some stunning photography, I loved the chapter on outdoor games – a great addition to the book.

Informative and Enjoyable, all packed into one.

Packed with informative tit-bits, this book is a must read for anyone who is new to the world of camping and the outdoors, as well as those who have already had the experience, but want an enjoyable read. Throughout the book, Chris manages to write in a style which feels as if you’re speaking with him one on one, offering advice on kit, as well as the “how-to” behind getting out and enjoying the outdoors. This light-hearted approach to his writing leaves you informed, without feeling as if you’ve been lectured for hours on end. Couple this with the wealth of experience which Chris has had and you really do feel that you’re in safe hands from start to finish.

Well worth reading

I’ve known Christopher for decades and rate him as one of the UK’s most accomplished outdoor experts. This book combines many hard-won tips and ideas that should give anyone new to camping an invaluable insight into what to do and, perhaps more importantly, what not to do! The style is friendly, the advice is based on practical experience rather than the “I researched this in another book” advice offered by many other authors.

Excellent beginners’ guide to backpacking as well as camping Even if you’re planning to stay in B & B’s for a trek, the parts on navigation , dressing for the conditions and packing a large rucksack are worth the price. Some of it is common sense, some of it ” I’d never have thought of that.” I plan to camp later in the year for the first time and feel more confident about doing so having read this. Some of the advice I’d worked out,eg. stay local at first, spend minimally on equipment until you’re sure it’s your thing, but even then, it was reassuring having things confirmed by an expert.

What are you waiting for? get this book, read it and then get out there!

Having been in Scouting all my life I was pleased to find this book had several tips, tricks and helpful hints for the camping experience.

Overall a great little read with a spread of skills to suit many levels of experience.

I really enjoyed this book, its written as a journey from sofa to camp site, with humour. The advice is clearly from an expert but aimed at the beginner with interesting snippets for the more experienced. Its focus is on getting people out into the great outdoors. The advice on kit is clear and not about buying the latest gizmo and the kit lists are a handy addition. The first aid section is useful for everyone from dog walkers to Duke of Edinburgh expedition teams. The games at the back of the book are great for families or youth groups to use. Overall a great little read with a good spread of skills and advice to suit many levels of experience.

So – 53 years on the hills – Yorkshire Dales, English Lakes District, Austrian Alps, French Alps, Cascades – solo on El Camino from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela – 39 years teaching – 20+ years as a DofE assessor – hell, this is THE book – read and learn!

Best book on walking – ever

Was pointed in the direction of this book by my son as he seems to have inherited my love of walking. Oh how I wish this had been around when I started some 50 years ago. At last a book with common sense, good and experienced based information. I honestly feel that all young people thinking of D of E or not should be invited to read this book. If I had to add one thing it would only be “Have lots of fun, Take a lot of good memories but, Leave nothing but your footprints”. Bring on the next volume.

Great read whatever your skill level!

This book is filled with useful tips and information right from the start to the back cover. As a keen outdoor enthusiast myself, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to spend time outdoors. Whether you are heading out on your first camping trip or looking to expand and improve on your pre-existing skills, this book is filled with useful nuggets of information presented in an easy to read manner.

A well written book that will help you get into the wonder of the great outdoors. The style it is written in is like having a friend take you through the basics. It is informative yet fun and give you all the basic you need to have a great experience with your friends or family. I work with groups in the outdoors and this book will be great for groups to read and use as their first step guide to camping and enjoying a night under the stars.
