Motivational read tackling the pyschology of starting/maintaining a fitness regime…

Very impressed with my first read of the James Atkinson range of fitness books! This is a great one to start with as it focuses on the planning stage of setting a fitness regime and provides behaviour change strategies to help you achieve your aims. It covers everything from setting SMART-type goals, using visualisation & seeking out the right support. There are interesting anecdotes from the author throughout the book, about army life & his relationship with fitness at different points in his life- and there’s a sense that he has ‘been there’ whatever state of fitness you are starting from (so there’s no preaching importantly!). Overall -such a motivational book containing many strategies to get you started on the road to fitness and some which can be applied to other aspects of life too!

This book is in two parts, If you want to get to work on setting up your fitness or weight loss plans, you can jump right into Section Two and get started with the creation of your own wall chart and visual aid. This is set out in an easy to follow step by step manner. Even though everyone’s fitness goals will be different; weight loss; bodybuilding; marathon running etc., the principals behind making this motivational system seem to work well. The author also provides a template that you can use for some ideas and this can also be downloaded and used directly if you are struggling. You get a lot for your money

This book is a must for anyone wanting to make a lasting change with their fitness regime. I have found that it’s easy to start a new fitness routine but can be really hard to stick with it. I lose motivation after a few weeks. Jim’s stories and advice really helped me to rethink my approach to fitness and exercise. The idea of keeping a diary/journal was new to me but it makes the difference. I can be my own personal coach in a way. That has not only helped me to stick with my workout regime but has also boosted my confidence!

The aim of this book is to show us how to achieve fitness success, so we are able to get out there and act without any excuses, and attain our fitness goals. James Atkinson builds on his own personal experience of twenty years, and illustrates how we can develop the mindset required in the health and fitness arena. He stresses and explores such issues as motivation, health checks, training, diet, momentum, and, above all, self-analysis and self-awareness. A great element in the book is interspersing instructive details with anecdotal and autobiographical asides and recollections. The second part of the book contains fitness charts and takes the reader through the process in an accessible, ordered and detailed manner. Great stuff. Tim going to try it.

You’ll learn how to develop self belief, cultivate good habits and develop mental toughness. James Atkinson has done a brilliant job with this book. It provides very easy and simple to read content to help motivate you to build a plan for yourself to get fit. What makes it even more authentic is that James has provided real life examples from his own journey and translated his advice into simple terms whilst removing all the usual jargon that can be found in other fitness books. I would highly recommend this to anyone that would like to stay motivated to get fit and build a plan for themselves to fit their own lifestyle.
