Not a bad fitness book, very good for the beginner. There are some great fitness tips inside that relate to either mind-set, diet or exercise, each of which has an explanation as to why and how this will benefit you. Also, each of the tips are laid out in a logical order to follow over the course of a year.

It is possible and realistic to get from fitness newbie to fit and healthy in a year. James explains it will take motivation and the resolve to stick to it, but he does give some very good tips on how to stay motivated throughout. He has broken it down into 25 achievable changes and, obviously depending on where you are with your own fitness level, you can start these where you see yourself on this timeline (as I have done myself, skipping some of the steps that I already do). He starts with getting into a simple routine of fitting in the time in your daily life first, then adds simple things such as walks, drinking plenty of water and healthy eating and builds his tips from there (adding a new change every 2 weeks giving you time to adjust). Soon enough you will be starting to feel the benefit and towards the end of the year (depending on your own goals of course) you should be able to have a plan for your new fitness year and should be signed up for a race, doing weights work and jogging regularly, sprint training and most importantly be very inspired to keep going (and I bet you’ll look and feel fantastic!). All of these tips make good common sense, are explained well, and are simple enough to achieve bit by bit. It is also easy enough to swap James’ suggested fitness steps/changes for your own if you prefer to do things differently. Point is to stick to 25 simple bi-weekly changes to get you where you want to be on your fitness journey in a year’s time. Unless you are already seriously into fitness and healthy eating (and have a good routine going) this book will be very helpful to you.

British author and health enthusiast James Atkinson is a highly regarded bodybuilder and trainer and author of fitness guides and his is only in his early thirties – and VERY fit. Of all the many aspects of Jim’s books and programs and on and off line guides that make them special, it is his absolutely no nonsense approach that takes first place. He is a realistic, thoughtful, caring, but direct coach and he foregoes any ballyhoo about promises that can’t be kept. He takes the time to offer sound advice to prepare his followers, discusses all types of training from the dietary aspect to resistance training, cardio training, tucks in some supportive information of DMOS (for those of us who are beginners with Jim, that stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) and how to differentiate that from muscle injury, and Motivation – that all important ingredient in successful training.

In this book the author tells about his personal experiences he went through to achieve his fitness goals and in the process developed tips that I intend to incorporate in my fitness program. The author stresses the importance of consistency and achieving your physical goals won’t be quick. It’s a lifestyle change. This fitness guide starts with a mind-set and takes you through diet and exercise. He provides some healthy recipes in the book to help you as you work toward a healthy lifestyle. This guide is well layout and I enjoyed reading about the author’s experiences. If you have fitness goals and want to achieve them, read this book!

I was actually in an advanced reader group for this book so had early access to a digital version. I do however prefer paperback books, especially in the nonfiction/ ‘how to’ genre. It’s nice to see that this paperback book actually has some pages at the back for notes.
