I am a very keen fitness fanatic and dancer, having been part of a street dance crew for the past few years and now moving on to styles such as house and vogue.

Learning to dance by reading a book is not dissimilar to taking exercise by watching a video.

Points you the right way

I was half expecting the old fashioned dance manuals showing positions of feet upon a floor, marking out the different steps. It’s not quite like that, but the step by step approach is retained, just this time with photographs and a QR code atop each page linking to a short (typically 15 second) video of the move in question. If you don’t have a device to scan the QR code with then the videos will not be available, so make sure you have a suitable device with QR reading software. I had to download something extra for my ipad for it to read the codes.

I got this book because I’ve been trying a bit of dance as part of the long road back to fitness.

Good intro to street dance

I am no dancer, so I handed this book to a daughter-in-law who just happens to be a professional dance instructor. The book is divided into various street dance styles, and takes a dip-onto approach to explaining the moves in each on. Moves are explained using photos and simple explanations, so that you can understand how they work. There are plenty of moves to work through, so you’ll pick up a lot from this book.

Street Dance: The Best Moves – DJ Hooch

Accessible and Informative, Combining Book and Online Videos

Street Dance is a softcover book, clearly laid out, well illustrated using clear photographs and easily understood text that links to specially recorded YouTube videos that show you the moves in action. The combination of step-by-step photos with online videos to learn the dance moves works very well.

A well produced book with a clever use of QR Codes

Street Dance: The Best Moves proved a bit too energetic for me so I passed it on to my boys for full evaluation! It is a nicely produced book that gives some history of the movement and shows various styles and moves. The really clever thing about this book is the fact that QR Codes are included to link the the instructions in the book to real demonstration videos showing how the moves look in real life – this is the first time I’ve seen this technique used in a book but I’m sure this will become commonplace in the future. This book also benefits from Amazon’s “Look Inside” feature on the Product Page which allows you to look into the book like you could in a bookshop – a really handy way of seeing if the book is what you expected. My boys enjoyed the book – but found some of the content a bit dated by their standards – I found it an interesting look into another world and thought it was very well produced. I feel unqualified to recommend or otherwise as you will have more idea of the appeal to you by checking the book out personally – but for the interesting use of QR Codes and the general high production values I will give this book five stars at the current price.
