Excellent, logical system for learning the fingerboard while playing real music

This e-book is an instructional guide to playing the guitar. Its main aims are: to teach the player a systematic understanding of the guitar fingerboard; and then to guide the player into using that knowledge to play relatively sophisticated single-note lines all over the neck over standard blues changes.

Great guide to the CAGED system

I bought this book after doing some research as I had been looking for a book that explains the CAGED system after viewing some youtube videos on the subject. This book had good reviews so I decided to give it a try. The book explains the concepts and a very clear and succinct way and is easy to follow. The main concept in the book is to understand how the basic root position chord shapes connect and repeat across the fretboard and in so doing overlay the major/pentatonic scales. This really does unlock the guitar fretboard and tying licks/arpeggios to specific chord shapes then creates a palette of connected shapes and phrases for improvisation/soloing. Would recommend to others without hesitation.

A great way of breaking things into manageable chunks that you can keep plugging away at, but later (after quite a bit of hard practice) allows you to link each scale position together. The blues licks are really good too, and I’ve found myself noodling along to songs and venturing further up and down the fret board, which I’d never bothered to do before. I found previously I was just learning solos parrot fashion, but now I’m spending much more time just trying to improvise while jamming with just about anything (it’s amazing to see how well the blues scale blends in with everything from pop to rock and everything in between). Feels like it’s going to be a long path to climb, but as my lack of ability to improvise was the most annoying part of my playing, even being able to make a start at sorting this aspect has gotten me back into my guitars.

Worth its weight in gold if you want to understand how the fretboard works.

I have been playing the guitar for almost forty years so I have bought quite a few guitar books along the way. I can honestly say that this is one of the best books I have ever read and used to unlock the fretboard. The explanations are clearly set out and the exercises help cement this understanding. You have to persevere but suddenly it all starts to make sense. So if you understand how chords are structured and can play scales fairly well this is definitely a gem of a book. I bought a couple more from the series on the strength of this and was not disappointed.

Useful for a wide range of players

Having played from an early age (~25 years ago) I have a fair few tricks and methods I employ when approaching the guitar. However, I found this book really helpful in getting away from deeply-ingrained patterns that I tend to fall back on. I also found it a great teaching aid.

I have an understanding of the 5 minor pentatonic shapes but this book on the CAGED system somehow makes them easier to see. To use it does help if you have an understanding of root positions, and I’m sure Joseph could help you with that in one of his other books or just contact him. I had never paid much attention to CAGED (complicated chord shapes etc) but this one on Blues and Licks fits the bill for me and I would recommend it if you are interested in progressing further with your own music.

What I like about this book along with the clearly written instructions

I’ve tried other scale books that teach the shapes but often applying them in a musical way has remained illusive. What I like about this book along with the clearly written instructions, is the fact that the licks provided start to build your musical vocabulary and I found myself not necessarily liking every lick but being able to take something away from each one that loosened the rigidity that comes with endlessly repeating and memorising shapes. You can start to see the potential in the shapes and your fretboard fluency naturally gets better as you practice the licks.

Very good book for those wanting to get more out of your Blues guitar technique

I like the tone and pace of this book, although the first chapter seems to go through the introduction a little bit fast for my liking.

Caged System and 100 Blues Licks

Another great book by this author, really explained well with the Tabs and Notation above along with audio. Have looked at some other books on the caged system and some are good but do not go into great depth like this just reading it makes a lot more sense than some others. I must admit I will have to get to grips with the Notation as I believe this will add a great deal to your Music.
