"A gripping thriller wrapped inside the world of celebrities and terrorism… A must read" – Suspense Magazine

American movie star Scarlett Cox and her husband, hotel tycoon Salvador Brazza, head to Africa to get away and resuscitate their ailing marriage. When robbed of their money and passports, they seek help from the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam on the very day Al Qaeda chooses to bomb it. In an eyeblink they are taken hostage and whisked across the border deep into the Congo, one of the last truly wild places left on earth.

Battling terrorists, deadly wildlife, and cannibalistic rebels, Scarlett and Sal must find a way to survive in a violent, primeval world. And the only person who may be able to save them is the assassin sent to kill them.

Interview with the Author
Q – So, who are your favorite authors and why?
A – I grew up reading all the big names in horror like Stephen King and Dean Koontz and James Herbert and Clive Barker. I’ve also always enjoyed Bentley Little and Richard Laymon. Recently I'm getting into some new names like Bobby Adair and Joe Hill and Blake Crouch.

Why do I like them? The answer to that is pretty simple. They write fantastic horror stories that check all the boxes: realistic characters, real chills, lurking dread, danger, lightning-fast pacing, plots full of twists and turns. And they also experiment with other genres, mixing horror with sci fi, psychological suspense, crime thrillers, and so forth.

Q – What other books do you have available?
A – I started out writing in the suspense genre with White Lies. Then I moved on to action/adventure with The Taste of Fear. However, now I am firmly in the horror game. They are as follows in order of publication:

– White Lies
– The Taste of Fear
– Suicide Forest
– Black Canyon
– The Catacombs
– Helltown (coming soon)

Q – So, why should readers give these books a try?
A – Because they are fast and fun and include quite a few surprises and scares (and the occasional touch of humor). They have hit the top ten bestsellers list in Kindle’s Suspense/Thriller/Horror categories, and they have been been featured in Amazon's Thrillers 100 Must Reads list.

Customer Reviews

Readable and an OK storyline

 on 23 March 2015
By Mr J P Heron
With all the free material out there I won’t read something if it doesn’t grab me in the first few pages. This passed the test. It was better than the reviews I had read prior to downloading it. I wouldn’t say it was a classic but it gripped me enough to want to pick it up when I had a free moment.

Great story

I couldn’t put this book down, it is 2,30am and I had to finish reading before I could go to sleep, I will look out for more Jeremy Bates books as this was a good thriller, I have found another good author to follow,

Mostly very entertaining, although a bit silly at the end

Lively, exciting, gripping, tense, thrilling, they are all words that could be used to describe “The Taste of Fear” by Jeremy Bates, and they would be true for a good part of it. Unfortunately it started off a bit slow, and it took me sometime to understand the plot, although once it got going it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat, and I can say that I mostly enjoyed it, UNTIL THAT IS, the ludicrous last few chapters, my word, how could Jeremy get it so wrong, I was ready for six stars let alone five, but big cats do not do that Jeremy, particularly Leopards. No Homo-Sapien could ever be aware of a Leopard approaching, which would only attack from ambush anyway, not confrontational. Animals DO NOT eat heads or intestines either Jeremy. I have been attacked by a Big Cat in real life, try my e.book “The Echo of Dust”; and as for the men against the animal, WELL what can one say, and then a women diving in with the crocodiles with her hands tied behind her back, and swimming?? underneath a large boat like it, it beggars belief I’m afraid. Still, overall it was an entertaining read and I’m happy with my four stars. Keep it going Jeremy.

Murder and mayhem in darkest Africa

A film starlet and her “connected” businessman husband go on a safari in Africa, but his business connections mean there’s an assassin on their trail and terrorists are doing their best to cause mayhem. A heady cocktail in which to set this magnetic thriller.

I enjoyed reading the book

Overall great book, but as a person who has been at most places described in the book I have to make a few minor remarks: 1: there is absolutely no cell phone signal in several areas Sal is talking on his phone. 2: in real life, there are no red Toyotas at the place the author writes about one… they are all white. 3: the smell of cordite: the last time you smelled burned cordite after a gunshot was 80 years ago, that powder is not used any more. 4: You can’t reach GPS signals (or transmitters) in the rain forest or jungle – it is simply too dense. I tried that personally. 5: There is no Ruger P38 pistol… it’s called Walther P38. 6: Wild cats (e.g. Panthers) don’t attack by scratching their prey’s back but they always go for the prey’s neck.

“A frighteningly good thriller”

 on 4 July 2015
By Father Ted
I think what helps to lift this story above the rest is the way in which the tension and the terror grows. Things start slowly as we meet Scarlett the actress and her husband and entrepreneur Sal. The fire that destroyed part of the luxury hotel his firm were building in Dubai might have been an accident after all, surely someone wouldn’t have a reason to want him dead?

A good read

I enjoyed the book. There were however a few things that I found difficult to really believe and that took away some of the enjoyment, hence 4 stars rather than 5. Trying not to put any spoilers in, the unbelievable bits for me ( no particular order) Hostages in dire circumstances and when first thrown together, arguing with one another. Husband and wife bickering at times of real crisis. Sal refusing to get in the car with Thunder and Scarlett. The Danny & Fitzgerald fight scene. Still, a good read for sure, I am picky!

Given me a taste for the Author’s other books…

This is the first I’ve read by the author and on this showing I’ll be looking for more. OK, so it was a little far-fetched in places but it’s fiction, it’s meant to be! The few negative reviews that said it was too gory or violent – don’t you read the synopsis? What do you expect from a book about terrorism? Besides….turning on the news these days is worse.
