While travelling all over Britain on his pushbike, non-flying travel writer Dixe Wills is forever popping into old churches to look around, grab a moment of tranquility or just to shelter from the elements. Extending his love of all things tiny into yet another area, this book is his guide to 60 of the loveliest and most diminutive churches that Britain has to offer, many of which are known only to locals or tourists who are simply lucky enough to stumble across them. Representing a unique slice of British local history and attitudes, tiny churches are the great survivors of the world. Unlike grand cathedrals, they were built to serve more humble ends, but they withstood centuries of religious unrest (and the Victorian 'church improvers') to survive into this most irreligious of centuries. Today, scattered all over Britain, these atmospheric places retain the essence of what they were when the stonemasons, labourers, smiths, carpenters and glaziers were corralled together to build them.

This is a wonderful little book, I was intending to give it as a Christmas present but am sorely tempted to hold onto it. The presentation & the illustrations are of the highest quality and the text is a delight. It makes me happy just to hold it.

A brilliant book , giving enough information about each church without overwhelming the reader . I shall enjoy dipping into it when planning a journey to an area which contains one or more of the churches featured . A REALLY GOOD buy !!

This is a thick book and a beautiful reference. If you are a church crawler, or a lover of old architecture, you will love this book. It has interesting description of these spaces which are the embodiment of the faith, hope and dedication of the builders and faithful. The cover design is a work of art in itself. The dust cover has cut-outs of the window frame and the stained glass part of it is on the cover itself. It makes the book just that much more fun and beautiful and a graceful addition to shelf or coffee table top. My only thing is part of the dust jacket has a full tear at its narrowest part so… i patched it up with a piece of transparent tape but still. Oh well. Still no complaints about the book itself and it definitely is a fun and interesting read.

Although I am not a religious person myself I was recommended this book due to the actual nature of it’s content and I am happy I listened. Enough detail on each building to keep things interesting and informative and also to tempt the reader into maybe visiting one or two of the Churches in the future to see for themselves.

Beautiful & great value!

Terrific book which goes just a little further than others with helpful information on keyholders, contacts and detailed addresses. Also superior photos for each church. I hope there may, in time, be a follow up
